The Sibelius Jubilee Year should be outsourced to Estonia
\nThere is no shortage of recordings of the mixed choir songs of Jean Sibelius, and there are even a couple of fairly new complete works \u2013recordings. In honour of the Jubilee Year, however, the record company Ondine has released a new double cd of the mixed choir songs of Sibelius, and the selected choir is the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. In this case, outsourcing to Estonia has paid off \u00ac – quality this high is not available is Finland.<\/p>\n
The most astounding aspect of the recording is the very high level of the choir\u2019s vocal technique and other skills. Finnish choirs simply cannot reach a sound this professional, rich, controlled and homogenous. This is not bland your choir singing, strained amateur singing or thick opera. This is an in-tune, plastic and bearing mixed choir sound, which immediately updates the choir music of Sibelius to a professional level. The skills of the Estonian singers can be heard as even the dull hymns and mundane school songs receive a vigorous interpretation, coherent in every detail.
\nThe outsourcing also has its negative effects. The pronunciation sounds foreign from time to time, and especially in the l-letters and Scandinavian vowels \u00e5, \u00e4 and \u00f6, the Estonian accent creates a funny nuance. At times the choir clearly focuses on the vocal technique and not the text, which, considering the circumstances is an acceptable solution.
\nAnother problem is the sense of playing it safe in the interpretations. The experienced choir conductor Heikki Sepp\u00e4nen of course knows the songs of Sibelius very well, and is able to direct the Estonians into vigorous, secure interpretations \u2013 but that\u2019s it. For example, the eilaa-eilaa part in the opening track Rakastava is sung really beautifully, but these singers have the potential to more experimental sounds. There are not very many robust, clever or radical moments on this record, but luckily there are a few.
\nOne important thing is that with this record, the mixed choir music of Jean Sibelius gets an interpretation on an international professional level. This is a great favour to the music, and thanks for this belong to the Estonian choral tradition and to the understanding of the record company Ondine.
